Red Dragonfly - Tramea carolina

Red Dragonfly - Tramea carolina
Winton Woods , Hamilton County, Ohio, USA
May 5, 2010
I noticed several discussions about the differences between Carolina and Red Saddlebags. In this photo, one can see that there is a clear area near the body in the pigmented patch on the hind wing. Is there a definitive way to tell these species apart from these two photos which, unfortunately, are all that I am likely to get?

Nice find!
In the eleven years I spent in Cincinnati I found only one of these....but I also found Tramea onusta, the "red saddlebags," so keep your eyes open.

I agree
In your new image the smaller "clear" area in the saddle would indicate Carolina.

Signs point to Carolina
Range, large size of hindwing patch, smallness of clear window in said patch, and extensiveness of black on abdominal segments 8 and 9, although I had to look up both species to refresh my recollection. (using Abbott's guide to dragons of Texas & S.-Central US)
