Identification

Adult: forewing black with large curving white patch in PM area (broken by black veins), a white triangular basal patch, and a white spot between these two areas; hindwing black with two white patches; no colored "shoulder pads" on thorax; abdomen and thorax black, hairy; middle leg with tuft of orange hair-like scales

Range

western distribution: British Columbia to California

Habitat

adults visit flowers during the day

adults fly in spring

Androloma maccullochii is similar but has hairy yellowish "shoulder pads", a straighter oval-shaped white patch in PM area of forewing, and more prominent black veins on the hindwing (compare images of both species at CBIF)
