Protrusion

Protrusion
Sarasota County, Florida, USA
May 9, 2010
Size: 1 inch body
ID'd as Acanthocephala declivis. The cream colored protrusion caught my eye. It only appears on one side.
Is this normal? What is it? I'm macro bug curious. Thanks to all the educated experts on this site.
Feedback is always much appreciated.

Quick, great help! Interesting links & pics. Thank you.

Is this the same insect...
...as the one dated May 7, 2010?

same
Yes it is. A majority of the time I set them free alive. Didn't happen this time.
