Mystery Beetle - Platycerus quercus

Size: ~1cm, maybe a bit more
This fierce-looking beetle was crawling around an Indian cucumber root plant. It (the beetle) was slightly irridescent in the sunlight, but the camera just didn't capture it.

Okay, so I've looked this up in my Stephen Marshall insect book and, of course, there is no photo of this species, but there is one of P. piceus, which looks very similar. How are they different?

 
There is no
"Platycerus piceus" that I know of, but there is Ceruchus piceus. It can be differentiated from P. virescens but its possession of a non-geniculate (not elbowed) antenna. Platycerus have elbowed antennae (see your picture).
