Grape Cane Girdler - Ampeloglypter ampelopsis
Ballston Lake, Saratoga County, New York, USA
May 6, 2010
Size: ~ 3 mm
These little snout beetles make a circular series of perforations around new grape shoots, which easily break off. They are locally abundant, our grape vines get hit by them every year. Madarellus undulatus, perhaps? ID help appreciated.

I think you're looking for a different Charlie, but...
based on the damage shown in the last photo, I would think this is the grape cane girdler, Ampeloglypter ampelopsis. As described on p. 418 of (1); also see here, here (that site calls it A. ater; not sure if that's a synonym?), here, etc.

The descriptions
of the damage caused by the grape cane girdler match well with what I've observed. Looks like we need a new page for this critter. Thanks for your help :^)
