Bee-like Hoverfly - Mallota bautias - male

Bee-like Hoverfly - Mallota bautias - Male
Amherst, Massachusetts, USA
May 23, 2004
Looks like a Beefly, but the wing veination is closer to a Syrphid fly. I have seen other similar looking species in our yard as well.

This one is very territorial of it's resident shrub (a Burning bush). I've even seen it chase off Paper wasps! It is also pretty skittish and took awhile for me to get a good shot of it, here it was cleaning it's legs.

Update: I found similar species on Cedar Creek's site. Looks like it may be a Mallota cimbiciform.
