Fly falls prey

Fly falls prey
mouth of the Elwha River, Clallam County, Washington, USA
May 16, 2010
Size: fly: ~12 mm
This Habronattus hirsutus female captured this fly, and put up with me taking a number of photos from various angles. One angle I strove for shows the wing vein patterns and antennae of the fly pretty clearly. These flies are common on the sand in this location, where I often hunt Habronattus hirsutus. A male Habronattus hirsutus perched on a rock a foot or so away and pursued the female for many minutes after she dropped the fly.

Finally, the spider dropped the fly (possibly because I disturbed her) and the fly was on the sand for only a few seconds before an ant, Formica pacifica hauled it under a nearby rock.
