Bee ID - Xylocopa virginica

Bee ID - Xylocopa virginica
Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Randall County, Texas, USA
May 10, 2010
Size: ~25mm
This large bee was patrolling an open space for quite some time, and this is the only clear shot I got. Due to the hairless tail-end, I'm thinking carpenter bee, or are there bumble bees with similar design?

looks like Xylocopa virginica
but there are no records for this species from as far northwest in Texas as Randall County (see Map 1 in Hurd, 1955). I do not see the white hairs on T4 expected in males of subspecies texana, the expected subspecies in central Texas.

Please confirm that this was taken in Randall County in north Texas.

Yes
It was taken in Randall County south of Amarillo in Palo Duro Canyon.

If so it is a range extension, likely anthropogenic
looks like the eastern ssp. virginica

I see that we do have records for Xylocopa virginica - Eastern Carpenter Bee in Texas. Wonder if that might be it? For some reason I think yours might be a male. Check out the lower reference pictures.
