Melandryidae: Emmesa connectens
I think this is Emmesa connectens, but now I can't remember what E. labiata looks like. I will check the collection some day.

Collection now checked, and it is Emmesa connectens

new for the Web
Thanks for that ID, Donald, and congrats to Joyce - I could find no other photo of this species on the Internet. The new Guide page is here but I don't know whether American Beetles 1&2 lists this under Emmesa or Melandrya, as I don't have those references. Switching the name of the genus would only take a few seconds.

Emmesa, not Melandrya
The latter has at least seven raised longitudinal intervals on the elytra and the pronotum "distinctly narrowed anteriorly" according to American Beetles. This individuals pronotum might be said to be slightly "less distinctly narrowed." Then if the pronotum is unicolorous, which is the case here, it is Emmesa.

Melandryid
Compare. The pronotal grooves are the biggest clue. You'll spot some similar ones among the family images.

Melandryid
Thanks Jim. A new family for me. I moved to the guide for this family.

Moved to species page
based on Don Chandler ID.
