Skipper? Duskywing? - Erynnis juvenalis - male

Skipper? Duskywing? - Erynnis juvenalis - Male
Rochester, Monroe County, New York, USA
May 22, 2010

Goin' out on a limb here by moving it to species,
but it definitely looks like Juvenal's to me.

Moved from ID Request.

Yes and yes, duskywing skipper
You might check butterfliesandmoths.org to get a list of candidates for your county.

Thanks
Interesting, that the website list for my county differs from the regional checklist of the local butterfly club. For Duskywings, each list has an inclusion and exclusion that the other doesn't. I don't have a clue as to which might be more reliable.

An opinion and a generalization
I'd be inclined to look at all candidates, but focus on the local source. (The "bible" here in Orange County, California is a 30-year-old book, published locally. Two drawbacks are that scientific [!]names have changed and that a few new butterflies have taken up residence. Remarkably, none of the old guard has vanished, as far as I can tell.)

Statistical probability...
...would point to Juvenal's. The checklist has three, the Dreamy, Juvenal's and Wild Indigo. The Dreamy is listed as "special interest", so that's less likely. The flight times per my field guide indicate a much higher incidence of Juvenal's at this time of year, so I'd give it the nod, although I can't make a good guess based on illustrations.

Don't feel obligated to respond, I'm not looking to draw you into a long conversation.

Thanks again.
