Scarab beetle - Euphoria sepulcralis

Scarab beetle - Euphoria sepulcralis
Gainesville, Florida, USA
May 28, 2004
Found in my yard. Looks a lot like the pictures of Spangled Flower Beetle on this site and at http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/pi/enpp/ento/images/euphoria.jpg (A Gallery of Florida Insects site) The patterns on its back are like gold leaf. If anyone can confirm ID (Patrick?) I will add to the page.

Yes, Euphoria sepulcralis
Yes, I believe that is Euphoria sepulcralis, which I have given the common name "spangled flower beetle".

This is a real variable species, according to recent references. The beetle I was calling E. scolopacea, is now considered to be E. sepulcralis. Your photo is the "classic" sepulcralis, with the bold white marks on a dark background.

Spangled Flower Beetle
Nice common name Patrick,

Hannah, I've seen these beetles down in Florida as well. I'll try to dig up a shot of one.
