Black & White Sapygid Wasp - Krombeinopyga pumila

Black & White Sapygid Wasp - Krombeinopyga pumila
Webb Canyon, ~2000 ft. elevation, Los Angeles County, California, USA
May 15, 2010
Size: ~ 9.5 mm
I was quite excited when I rescued this wasp from the pool and realized it was a sapygid... previously, I'd only ever seen the yellow-and-black color combination. I'm not sure which species this is exactly... Hartmut Wisch and I have been speculating that this might possibly be Fedtschenkia anthracina (which is known to have been collected in the San Bernardino Mountains by Roy Snelling), but we have no confirmation for that theory yet. I have several more photos, so if different angles are needed to make an ID, please let me know!

It was a bit tougher trying to count the flagellomeres with the all black antennae, but I think I count "10" which should make this a female.

Surrounding habitat is chaparral and mixed oak woodland.

This is Krombeinopyga -
det. by Doug Yanega (UC Riverside), and "probably undescribed, according to our research collection."

Excellent news!
Thank you, Hartmut, for assisting me in obtaining an ID for this one and I am sincerely grateful to Doug for his expertise in putting a name to this wasp (and several others in the past).
