Windy day, in the shade. Hard to get a crisp shot. Hope these are ok for ID. Took me a few minutes to realize that they were flies. Is ID possible?

I wouldn't dream of calling this an ID.
I'll just point out that your flies look remarkably like these:



Of course, looks can be deceiving--which is why you'll want to wait for the opinion of an expert. :)

Nope Ken, you were completely right... the yellow sport on the thorax before the scutellum combined with the abdominal coloration are the give-away for this species...
