Tan-pocked weevil - Sphenophorus venatus

Tan-pocked weevil - Sphenophorus venatus
Las Cruces, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, USA
December 29, 2005
Size: 9 - 9.5 mm
Found dead under rock. At first I thought the tan was a layer of mud, but I decided, after looking at the two-toned legs, that it must be the natural color.

Sphenophorus venatus (Say)
Charles O'Brien det.

Moved from Billbugs.

Curculionidae: Sphenophorus sp.
Thought I might place this to species, but quickly gave up.

Thanks, Don.
And thanks to Eric, who first IDed it, though not with great certainty.

Billbug
This is one of the weevils known as "billbugs," presumably for the beak. I think the genus is Sphenophorus, but certainly in the same subfamily. Neat. The texture is nicely captured here.

Billbug
It certainly resembles Spheno*phorus, but I think I'll leave it here for a bit before moving it. Maybe someone else can name the species or confirm genus.
