"Cocuyo" Glowing Click Beetle
Captured (for photos) and released at: Indian Hammock Park, Kendall, Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA
May 30, 2010
Size: about 1.25 in.
Here is Ignelater havaniensis glowing. My nephew and I took a little bug hunting trek to a neighborhood park last night to try and photograph these guys glowing. Though they were all over the place, it proved too challenging for my point and shoot, so we decided to collect one to photograph at home under more controlled conditions. It was released unharmed back at the park. As you can see the photo is still not great as they seem to only glow when it is dark and when they are moving (two things that make taking a good pic hard).

Cocuyo
In Argentina there is a species that also has a light on the abdomen, brighter than the two "eyes" and it only shows when flying.
As kids we used to catch a handful of them and release them inside a closed, darkened room so they would fly about and give us quite a show.
Do these ones have the abdominal light?

No abdominal lights on these ones.
It seems just about everyone has fun childhood memories of the local species of glowing beetles, be them these click beetles or fireflies. In my other "Cocuyo" post I talked of how we use to place them belly up to compete and see who's jumped the highest(when you do this they snap and jump in the air to try and right themselves). I've handled them plenty as a kid and just recently for the pics. I'm sure this species only has the two glowing areas in the back of the pronotum.
