intertidal isopod - Ligia occidentalis

intertidal isopod - Ligia occidentalis
Crystal Cove, Orange County, California, USA
May 29, 2010
very common, ranging in size from 5-30mm. Seems like a close match to Peter Bryant's images of Ligia occidentalis? (ps: should I post crustaceans directly to crustacea, ID request, or some other place?)

Ligia occidentalis
Hello Chris,

Thanks for contributing this photo. Yes, it's Ligia occidentalis, probably a female. The body of the female is more tapered posteriorly than that of a male, and the antennae and uropods tend to be shorter. This species is very common at Crystal Cove.

Where to post...
Hi, Chris! Ron H. and I were down in the Laguna Beach area on Saturday -- looks like you had the same idea to head south for the day. :-)

According to this article, you should post non-insect arthropods to class. So, in this case of your two isopod images, I guess the best spot would be here. I can't help out at all with the ID, but my friend Jonathan probably can. Unfortunately, he'll be unavailable for the next month or so, but if no one has been able to help you out by then, I'll be sure to ask him to give them a look.

Thanks for all the help Harsi :)
I had checked that article but it appears I overlooked that line. I'll move these to Malacostraca for the time being.

I hope you and Ron had a good time and I'll be eager to see the shots from that adventure! The Laguna Beach area seems to be teeming with wildlife this time of year and I keep finding myself returning, and I manage to find something new everytime.
