Bear with me--this is a story of violence. I have been watching a nest of
Formica exsectoides
for some time now and saw these ants in what seems to be a defensive posture.

Nice story, Harlan.
I am particularly taken by the first image, of the two workers at attention -- probably reacting to and alarm pheromone or the like, squished out of the wounded nest mate.

The ants are Formica exsecto
The ants are
Formica exsectoides
and are 5-6 mm in length. The other critter (a springtail?) would be around 1-2 mm. I am looking for the id of the other critter.
