St. Lawrence Tiger Moth - Platarctia parthenos
Town of Baileys Harbor, DNR Mud Lake Natural Area, Door County, Wisconsin, USA
July 12, 2002
On July 10, 2002, I found "wings only" of adult under outside light. Something ate the body and left the wings. Needless to say, I was disappointed. Then, on July 12, 2002, Les Ferge of Madison, WI brought me a live specimen that he had found in his trap during the night in the DNR Mud Lake Natural Area that adjoins our property. I was thrilled!!!

We have to say once more
how much we enjoy your images -- and your science. Thanks again!

St. Lawrence Tiger Moth
Janice J. Stiefel Hi John and Jane. Thank you so much for your comments. After checking where you are from and discovering it was Skokie, IL, I was really excited. Skokie is where I grew up. That's where I used to collect Monarch and Milkweed Tussock caterpillars from the vast open prairie land that was loaded with Common Milkweeds and tall grasses. I LOVED it there and have many pleasant memories. Being the editor of a newspaper and writing articles on wild flora and insects has given me many opportunities to write about my years in Skokie. One of the articles is entitled, "Remembering What Once Was."
