Malachius male from Sedona
This is a male of Malachius capillicornis Abeille de Perrin, which Horn referred to as M. spinipennis (note the spine like tips of the elytra). M. capillicornis is a common, extremely variable, western species known from Canada to Mexico. Its distribution in the US includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington. Adults are often common in spring and summer in aggregations on flowering shrubs such as Ceanothus, Rhamnus and many others.
