Moth - Celypha cespitana

Moth - Celypha cespitana
Muscatine County, Iowa, USA

Moved, Celypha cespitana

Moved from Olethreutes deprecatoria.

Original ID of this was likely based on its similarity to this photo: https://bugguide.net/node/view/335328
That photo is still on the deprecatoria MPG page, despite having been moved out of the deprecatoria bin on BOLD 6 years ago, and moved off the BugGuide page soon after. Neither of these photos resemble actual deprecatoria, but the Oklahoma one being put up on MPG led to this on being misidentified and being put up on MPG and the MPG map including OK and IA dots, which has in turn led to misidentifications of this species elsewhere online. I've been tracing the line of misidentifications back since finding a bunch of mistakes on iNaturalist, and I think that's the source. Actual O. deprecatoria is a northern species occurring in Canada, northern New England, the Pacific Northwest, and high in the western mountains. IA and OK are way out of range anyway. Hopefully moving this one and getting MPG fixed will help remedy this issue.

Looks Like 2844 – Olethreutes deprecatorius
(no rsvp, thanks)
