the only reason they are is because the project obviously has an enormous potential. i can think of many ways the academic taxonomy can benefit from it, as the experts [a] get relived of tedious routine IDing common, trivial bugs -- now that BG handles a large chunk of this flow; [b] see interesting things pop up and get material for study from unexpected sources; [c] have unprecedented outreach that allows to educate the enthusiasts and direct their effort towards un[der]explored areas/habitats/taxa; &c....
