What is this? - Hagenius brevistylus
Fountain/Blue Lake, Mason County, Michigan, USA
May 30, 2010
Size: 2 inches approx.
I found this floating with the current in Blue Lake. I thought it was dead but after a few minutes in my hand it started moving. I put it on a paper plate and took the picture because I'd never seen anything like it.

Moved from ID Request.

Yes, Check this out

It is the larval stage of a dragonfly
It may be leaving the water to become an adult. From the shape and the size given it is likely Hagenius brevistylus - Dragonhunter, in the guide here

Thank you!
Wow, I had no idea that was how they started. I did see a lot of empty "shells" (for lack of a better description, all over on trees and walls, which someone said were from dragonflies as well. They changed dramatically from this prehistoric looking bug to what they end up being. How amazing!
