Spilomyia larva? - Spilomyia citima

Spilomyia larva? - Spilomyia citima
Pullman , Whitman County, Washington, USA
March 23, 2010
Size: 1.5 cm
I found this among a dozen or so in a tree hole. I took 4 to try to hatch out. One appears to have hatched while I was away for several days (the main photo in this submission). It took 2 1/2 months to hatch. The larvae undulate in the water with the narrow end at the air/water interface. When the water level is low, they move along the bottom of the container with by contraction and extension.

It is great that the larvae are found and reared! Awesome find! Very typical larvae...
