Ant - Monomorium minimum

Ant - Monomorium minimum
Fort Bragg, Cumberland County, North Carolina, USA
January 9, 2006
Size: 2-3 mm
Found these little ants walking in a line on the garden border. These two have different shaped abdomens, but I'm pretty sure they are the same species.

One is "fatter"
The difference in abdominal shape and dimmensions reflects the fact that one has recently taken a large liquid meal, and has a full crop. This one is probably the common Monomorium minimum, though I can't resist mentioning that a less common, semiarboreal species, M. trageri, also occurs in the area. The two are distinguishable by hair counts.

Thanks for the help
George. I guess I should have linked the images together, as my comment doesn't make much sense otherwise. :)
