Clematis Clearwing - Alcathoe caudata - female

Clematis Clearwing - Alcathoe caudata - Female
Town of Baileys Harbor, Hidden Corners Sanctuary, Door County, Wisconsin, USA
August 9, 2003
Came to outside night light. At first I thought this was a parasitic wasp. Sent photo to Steve Krauth, Curator of Insect Research Collection, UW-Madison. It was a Door County Record.
Steve's comments: "Nice shot. This is definitely Lepidoptera: Sessidae and not represented in the collection. Using the Moths of North America fasicle on Sessidae I identified the moth as Alcathoe caudata (Harris). Adults have been reared from Clematis virginiana and have been collected from Nova Scotia west to Ontario and Wisconsin and south to Florida and Louisiana. Females have dark forewings, clear hindwings and yellow on the antennae, portions of the tibia and tarsi. The photo is a match."
