when i first saw the thumbnal, my immed. reaction was, Pedilus
the picture proved i was wrong, but i still sent it to Daniel K. Young, the pyrochroid guy, & Director of UW Insect Research Collection (WIRC), just for fun. Here's his comment: "Yes, a very common thing in the field - I suspect mostly Mullerian mimicry as cantharids (and lycids in some parts of the world) are commonly distasteful ("repugnatorial glands") and Pedilus presumably has some sort of "cantharidin thing" going for it. Can also involve oedemerids (also Mullerian via cantharidin) and cerambycids (more likely Batesian), among others."

now i'm wondering where to put this useful info in the guide...
