Ant of some sort - Manica hunteri

Ant of some sort - Manica hunteri
Mountains, Montana, USA
June 6, 2010
Size: aprox. 3-5mm
Found along a dirt road up in the mountains about 3-4 thousand feet up. holes are about 2in. in diameter with some sticking up from the ground in short tubes about 1-2 in. The taller tube like mounds seem to be made more due the the dampness of the area vs. how they are normally constructed.

Manica sp. (Myrmicinae) - worker
These ants are typical for high-altitudes biotopes West of the Great Plains. I can only second Ron: these pics are quite pretty.

thanks for all the compliments from everyone.
Also what does the sp. stand for species I assume? I will move the photos out of ID request latter on tonight to a more specific area when I have the time.

Yes, sp. means species
Somewhere at the site is a glossary, and it should cover things like that.

Nice series, Lonny.
.

Indeed very nice.
Indeed very nice.

Thanks.
Do the best I can to gather info. so that I can get a close ID.

Only two real options as far
Only two real options as far as species either M. hunteri or M. invidia. I have seen no records of invidia from Montana so would go with this being hunteri.

I'd really like to see the in
I'd really like to see the infrpostpetiolar tooth, though.
