Boulder Grasshoppers - Melanoplus lakinus

Boulder Grasshoppers - Melanoplus lakinus
Boulder, Colorado, USA
August 19, 2009
Size: 1 inch
These 2 grasshoppers were in the mid-morning sun. What species are they?

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

A pair
of Melanoplus lakinus. These are really common east from the mountains in Colorado. They have a different "look" there than in the Southwest. It's the only species with short wings likely to be seen away from the mountains; however, sometimes M. lakinus has normal long wings, and in the foothills you'll start seeing other short-winged species as well.

Thanks very much David for the ID and much appreciated. I did see this pair east of Boulder in the lower areas and so that would be right on with your comments above.

Thanks again,
Colm Lawler

i forgot this was one i photo'd in Lakewood
Mine looks a bit more striped in the abdomen.

They vary quite a lot in appearance
even in the same area, but especially from place to place.
My favorites up in that area are the bright green ones (rare down here in NM).

check out Melanoplus
I suspect that they're in there. David will know the species. If nobody gets to it in a couple more days go ahead and move to Grasshoppers - Suborder Caelifera.

Thanks very much for your help and it is appreciated.
