Mega-roach - Eurycotis floridana

Mega-roach - Eurycotis floridana
Highland County, Florida, USA
January 15, 2006
Size: 4 cm
Undisturbed by my work on the flower bed for the past week. Comes and goes at a liesurely pace. My wife is rather annoyed that it has not met with an untimely death - but what can I say. It's outside and seems to be quite at home there. I'm arriving at "Eurycotis floridana" for an ID.

Do NOT Smoosh
Might I reccommend that your wife NOT crush this insect in any way - unless she actually likes the smell of bug-musk, that is.

Come visit us at the homestead. All are welcome!

I would agree
with this ID. I find these quite often in scrub habitats living under dead branches and palmettos.

Thanks
Our home is on the edge of that kind of habitat.
