Jeweled Green Midge - male

Jeweled Green Midge - Male
East Greenwich, Kent County, Rhode Island, USA
June 18, 2010
Size: 5mm
Night near lights. Looks similar to other Tanytarsus photos here so I go with that to start.
I have no idea what those jewels on its posterior are.

Moved
Moved from Chironominae.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

It has mites.

I suppose they would be, now wouldn't they.
The thought that they might be parasites was entirely removed from my brain by their symmetry.

Pairs
They come in symmetric pairs more often than chance would dictate.
