Immature orb-weaver? - Neoscona

Immature orb-weaver? - Neoscona
Bowers Park, Santa Clara County, California, USA
June 19, 2010
Size: ~ 3-4 mm
I beat this attractively patterned araneoid from an oak tree near a creek. Immature under the scope. A bit too patterned and too many spots for A. displicata, right? Any ideas?

Moved
Moved from Spotted Orbweavers.

Moved
Moved from Orb Weavers.

There were records from southern California
in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas. We'll try to find the reference. But now there seems to be a growing population in the San Francisco area too.

Aha -
I found it in the Pan-Pacific Entomologist here. Thanks J&J. I'll see if I can find a mature around here to confirm for my own interest.

Yes, looks more like
Neoscona crucifera

Thanks J&J -
It's interesting that we have several records of crucifera in BG from California, even though the recently published Orb-weaving Spiders of Canada and Alaska doesn't show any records from CA (map 43). I wonder if there's been a range expansion?
