Wasp - Campsomeris tolteca Bee or Wasp? - Campsomeris tolteca

Campsomeris at any rate - female
Such pale greyish compound eyes are fairly typical, and help to distinguish most Campsomerinae from Scoliinae. The very different look of both - nice - pictures illustrates the importance of the viewpoint.
The species name "tolteca" suggests a mainly Mexican distribution, which would fit rather well with this specimen.

Such pale greyish compound ey
I have specimens from CA,MEX, and I believe that ive seen specimens from TX, so they have a pretty wide range. Also there are only 25 different species of scoliid wasps in the USA, and the only one ive seen with and orange or red abdomen is C.tolteca

How odd!
The abdomen of this one and of the other image appear comletely different. Also the placement of the antennae seems to be different. Are you sure that they are the same specimen?

Beatriz,
Yes, we are almost certain that both photos are of the same individual. The orange color of the abdomen is visible in the photo which shows the wings.

Thanks to all of you for your comments and help with ID!

Scoliid Wasp
Family Scoliidae. Some of the other scoliid images look like Campsomeris species, too.
