Rio Grande water beetle - Laccophilus maculosus

Rio Grande water beetle - Laccophilus maculosus
Las Cruces, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, USA
December 29, 2005
Size: 6 mm
This handsome beetle stood out from 4 or 5 other water beetles of another species that accompanied it under an object (rock I think) near a small puddle on the bed of the Rio Grande at a point where it is 10 or more miles north of the Mexican border.

This image is a composite of four others of various focal depth, combined in Helicon Focus (see discussion)
to produce one "completely" focused image. (I see I should have made one original in between the two uppermost layers.) The software requires absolute stability of camera and subject, so its use is not appropriate for any but the most catatonic of live insects.
