I was surprised that there was yet no Guide page for this Orthosia species. It is such a common moth in the spring around here. The caterpillars feed on the foliage of manzanita (Arctostaphylos) - a common shrub in the woods of the Westwood Mountain Meadows Basin, and throughout California and beyond. The different variants of this moth species, in this area, are many. I am including several examples of many that I have photographed. I begin with this one with wings spread. The name "pulchella" means 'pretty' - an appropriate name I think! The linked thumbnails of some of the other specimens are shown below:
