Bird Grasshopper -
Schistocerca nitens
Westlaco, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
October 23, 2004
I didn't get a size on this, but I remember it was very long, maybe around 70mm to the tip of the wings. Any help getting to species would be great.

Gray Bird Grasshopper?
S. americana looks close, but after checking the book
(

)
and the guide pages, I'm thinking Gray Bird Grasshopper - S. nitens.
The markings on the side of the thorax, and the hind legs look like S. nitens, and the description in the book says highly variable in color, and spotting on the FW.

Indeterminable.
I'm not familiar with where Hidalgo County is, but it probably doesn't matter. Many specimens of Schistocerca just can't be determined, even from preserved material in some cases. Very nice image in any event.

Near Mexico
It's on the Rio Grande, about 50 miles from the coast.
