Huntsman spider - Heteropoda venatoria - female

Huntsman spider - Heteropoda venatoria - Female
Lady Lake, Lake County, Florida, USA
January 20, 2006
Found this spider in a box that was in our metal building, I had taken it outside to go through it, and surprise! Female?

This is
actually a huntsman spider, Heteropoda venatoria.

Thanks,
how can you tell the difference?

Different in
the yellowish/white clypeus (band below eyes), the eyes, carapace shape.
The running crab spiders are generally smaller, flatter, and different eye placement. The shape of the abdomen is more angled as well.
As Eric noted, huntsman are usually dull, but they do have pattern. It is not very pronounced most of the time in females, though.

Question.
Not that I have seen lots of Heteropoda, but to my recollection they are pretty dull-looking, not dark and patterned like this specimen. Is there just a lot of variability, Jeff?

My guess
is you are right it is both a running crab and a female. Maybe someone else will know more.

Thank you
Lynette.
