Neospondylis upiformis - male

Neospondylis upiformis - Male
Tehachapi, 6000' elevation, Kern County, California, USA
June 27, 2010
Size: 18 mm & 8 mm
Both of these specimens showed up in a pitfall "baited" with ethylene glycol. I couldn't believe the size difference.

Size difference...
Wow! Dennis, are these male and female of the same species?

They're still soaking in alcohol to remove the ethylene glycol, so I haven't pulled the genitalia yet. If someone like Casey had found the little guy only I'm sure he would have given it a new name. The eyes stick out farther than the pronotum and the pronotum is smoother and more parallel-sided than the larger specimen. I pulled the genitalia and both were male.

Fascinating!
I would not have believed there could be such variation within the same species and sex...

I guess size is important! ;-

Good one!
I am writing a post on my blog that mentions this beautiful bug. I referred my readers the this picture as an example of the size variation. I hope you don't mind...

No problem Jon!
I posted it to share information.
