gryllus - Gryllus veletis - male

gryllus - Gryllus veletis - Male
Merrimack, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
June 24, 2010
As you can see I found him in pretty rough shape. He is missing his back two legs, half a cercus, and a bit of wing. I am currently keeping him as a pet. I tried recording his chirp (which he does a LOT, espeically when I am trying to sleep!) but for some reason it didn't pick up on my camera's mic. His favorite foods seem to be wheat seeds (the ones I fed him were still green-yellow but he snarfed them anyway), and other insects. I put a dead moth in there and he went right over to it and devoured it. I had a living leafhopper in there, specifically a silver leafhopper, and when I was replacing the grasses, I noticed an empty exoskeleton and no leafhopper to be found. So maybe he's an active predator too. I will work on trying to get a recording of his chirp, and find someplace to upload it, because I don't have a youtube account.

almost certainly
Gryllus veletis, but there is always at least a tiny bit of uncertainty with just photos in this genus.
