Big One - Sphecius speciosus - female

Big One - Sphecius speciosus - Female
Desoto, Dallas County, Texas, USA
July 7, 2010
Size: Almost 4cm
This one was noticeably larger than the others that have been in my yard, so I decided to catch it just to make sure it wasn't something else. When it started warming up after a brief chill it both looked and sounded like a prop plane readying for flight and taxiing on the runway!

Female.
The pair of blade-like spurs on the tip of the hind tibia immediately give away the gender on cicada killers. Those spines are not modified like that in the males.
