Norwottuck Rail Trail near Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
May 7, 2010
I had seen a grand total of one odonate all year, that one an Eastern Forktail, before Tom Gagnon brought me to a powerline cut that crossed the rail trail near Belchertown. It was darned hot, and the odes finally were flying! ID'd a dozen species that day; the most abundant was this one, with probably 25 or more, looking recently emerged. Other species observed the same day included Chromagrion conditum, Ischnura verticalis, I. posita, Basiaeshna janata, Gomphaeshna furcillata, Anax junius, Epitheca sp., Plathemis lydia, Libellula quadrifasciata, Pachydiplax longipennis, Leucorrhinia intacta, and another one just posted to the Guide which I suspect was L. frigida.
