T. californicum female - Theridion californicum - female

T. californicum female - Theridion californicum - Female
Stulsaft Park, Redwood City, San Mateo County, California, USA
July 10, 2010
Size: 4 mm
I beat this adult female theridiid from a willow tree overlying a creek. The epigynum is a perfect match to this species - one of the few Theridion sp. with a raised epigynum and a different profile than neomexicanum, which I've also found at this location. Comments welcome. I'm starting to get more comfortable with this genus, but there are many species and I'm always open to correction! :)

Variant abdominal pattern?
Just noting that the abdominal pattern is somewhat unusual in this female, but Levi 1957 does mention "One specimen with a median red dorsal band".

Nice work; after working on these small specimens for a while, you'll soon be able to perform microsurgery.
