Caterpillar 1 (on Asteraceae) - Eupithecia miserulata

Caterpillar 1 (on Asteraceae) - Eupithecia miserulata
Alvethorpe park, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 1, 2010
I have a whole bunch of geometrid caterpillars feeding on cone flowers or other Asteraceae. I don't know if they are different species or just different instars. It would be nice to know.

Moved
Moved from Eupithecia.

If they're on coneflowers (Rudbeckia)...
Eupithecia miserulata is the only species recorded from that host. This flower looks like it might be Leucanthemum vulgare, in which case the options would be E. miserulata or possibly the introduced E. satyrata (which we don't have in the guide).

Hmmm. . .
In that case it is time to start trying to raise some. I will see if I can do it.

Moved
Moved from Geometrid Moths.

This one looks like Wagner's image
of Eupithecia miserulata. His description: "Most individuals have darkened arrow-shaped marks over the first five or six abdominal segments." But there are 40 some species of Eupithecia in the East, so we're afraid we don't know if the others are the same species or not?? :(
