They spent several hours on this piece of wood. They looked like leaves.

Not an expert
but looks like Anisota virginiensis (Pink-striped Oakworm Moth - Hodges#7723), could it even be Anisota virginiensis discolor (Texas Pink-striped Oakworm Moth)??

Yes, A. virginiensis
Not sure of the subspecies though. Nice find.
