That's odd. I found a Copestylum last year, but it was blue and it buzzed when flying. This one wasn't and didn't.

Syrphid, actually. Mexican cactus fly, female.
"Beaky" face, as revealed in side view, points to Copestylum. I believe this is the largest of that genus. There are usually tons of them here in SoCal, but I haven't seen many so far this year.
