I found it in my pool early in the morning and it was still alive. It was probably a little more than one inch long.

yes, this is a male horsefly, looks like Tabanus atratus

Horse fly
I am a pure amature but I would check out "Horse Fly" in the guide....if I am incorrect one of the experts will set both of us onto the right path. By the way, they have a nasty bite.
