Size: as big as a blue dasher
Looks like it is eating a blue dasher! Scary looking.

Thank you! I liked the shot, I thought it was a good "action" shot. Does this species have a common name other than Robber Fly?

I don't know the species. I moved the photos to the robber flies page so the experts in the family will see them and comment. With robber flies and Syrphidae, at least, posting directly to family page is as good as posting to ID request. We're still in the middle of revising posting guidelines to say so.
