Smartweed Caterpillar - Acronicta oblinita

Smartweed Caterpillar - Acronicta oblinita
Perry County, Ohio, USA
June 19, 2004
Approx. 5cm. In a plant on the edge of a scrub area on a farm. This one has red
"spikes", but otherwise looks similar to:

caterpillar
Mike, would you edit this photo and identify it as a caterpillar so it shows up in the guide when one looks at caterpillars? Thanks

Updated
Hi John/Jane...thanks for moving the image. I updated it.

yes, Smartweed Caterpillar - Acronicta oblinita, I think
References say this is rather variable as to markings. I've seen a rusty one, like the one you photographed, here in Durham recently, so I think that's what you've got.
