Caterpillar on wild carrot -
Papilio polyxenes
Crystal Lake, McHenry County, Illinois, USA
July 25, 2010
Size: 1 Inch
Looks like it might be ready to pupate. I haven't seen these before, and it didn't seem to match anything in my caterpillar guides.

a Black Swallowtail caterpillar
or Dillworm -
Papilio polyxenes asterias
. Yours is about half grown, and is at the age where it is between the bird dropping look and the green barber pole look.

Excellent, thanks
I'll have to keep an eye on this patch of wild carrot to see how this creature is coming along.
