Trogossitid pupa - Thymalus marginicollis

Trogossitid pupa - Thymalus marginicollis
Hudson, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
January 12, 2006
Size: 5.5 mm
My shelf fungus pieces are loaded with larvae. This is the first pupating one I've noticed. Notice that the pupa has retained the two spines or hooks that the larva had, as well as a supply of bristles. There are also fly larvae in the fungus pieces, and if they look interesting to me , I might photograph the adults. I've been keeping the shelf fungus pieces in plastic containers with lids ajar to retain moisture but avoid any Carbon dioxide build-ups that would kill off the larvae.

Photographed Feb. 23, 2006.

Moved
Moved from Thymalus.

Probably not
Since the one measured Bolito*therus corn*utus female in bugguide so far is 11mm long and the one Bolito*phagus corti*cola here so far is 8mm long, I doubt that any sort of Bolito*phaginid will emerge from this pupa. In fact, it seems about the right size for Neo*mida bi*cornis, also in family Tenebri*onidae.

I'm moving these images back to family level.
