Narcissus bulb fly
This is a fly in the Syrphidae (hover flies), Merodon equestris. It is one of the few "pest" species in the family, the larvae developing in the bulbs of daffodils (Narcissus). The adults are bee mimics highly variable in color pattern.

V J Hickey...thanks...I had received the same info a couple of hours ago from a friend, an entomologist, U Maine ext serv...I have a large supply of bulb plants...iris, lily, daffodils....in the same area that the fly was spotted on an iris leaf
